Again this October tiny Edom Texas will rock the art world with its annualEdom Festival of the Arts 2012. This family-friendly, fun event is free, yet it brings together artists and performers of the highest quality in a juried show held in the shade of an East Texas meadow on Saturday, October 20 from 10-6 and Sunday, October 21 from 10-4.
New artists this year include Lyn Foley who creates wearable art born in fire. Foley makes her own glass beads then puts them together with handmade findings to make colorful, sculptural jewelry.
Ina Crowe from Fort Worth makes paper, then turns the paper into lightweight, unusual jewelry.
Stephanie H. Ford produces western themed art using the old form of scratchboard. A potter from Dallas, Angela Gallia makes stoneware using slab construction which gives her pieces amazing detail and design.
Several new artists design and create artistic clothing: Valery Guignon makes functional garments beautiful enough to hang on the wall; Laura Maclay designs fun and funky handbags; Leslie Kregel makes hats from recycled wool sweaters.
A block of wood becomes a Native American elder or laconic cowboy under the knife of wood sculptor Kevin Malone, while Deborah Wood’s photographs depict the natural world with a modern twist.
Popular favorites will return: jewelers, wood workers, painters, glass artists, sculptors, potters, photographers, weavers and fiber artists. Watch watercolor artists create a landscape or the blacksmith pound hot metal into graceful utensils. Find gorgeous handmade jackets, hats and purses, or hand-woven dishtowels and table runners. Pottery and ceramics of various styles will amaze and delight. The mixed media, sculptural art always amuses and charms every one of every age.
Edom is almost as famous for food as for art. There are booths with fair fare and full meals in the local restaurants. The festival grounds are just behind the town’s block of shops at the traffic light on FM 279, near the intersection with FM 314. Edom is located about half way between Canton and Tyler.
