City of Tyler Launches Public Art Program

City of Tyler Launches Public Art Program

The City of Tyler Main Street Department is launching its new Outdoor Public Art on Loan (OPAL) project.

The project will result in the exhibit of six large works of sculpture throughout the downtown area. The Main Street Department, in cooperation with the Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition (DTAC) and Heart of Tyler, Inc., has issued a request for proposals to sculptors throughout the region.

Exhibit sites were chosen by a DTAC volunteer committee comprised of sculptors, architects, landscape architects and others. A jury will select the six pieces that will go on display. Pieces will be installed in September 2013 and remain in place until July 2014.

Each artist whose work is selected will receive a $1,000 stipend and be honored at an opening reception on Oct. 4 at Gallery Main Street. Each piece of art will have a QR code, which will be linked to a webpage devoted to the artist’s work.

Don't miss this: 'Bernie' onscreen at Liberty, key players in attendance

From Liberty Hall:

This Thursday, May 23 we will show the Richard Linklater directed film, “Bernie” starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey. The movie is based on a true story that occurred in our own Carthage, Texas. Local mortician, Bernie Tiede (Black), strikes up a friendship with a wealthy widow (MacLaine).

The twist comes when Bernie kills her and then goes to great lengths to create the illusion that she's still alive. The film has cameos by many people who experienced the events first hand. We will have special guests speak before the show, Danny Buck Davidson the Panola County District Attorney, played in the film by McConaughey and Ms. Kay Baby Epperson who had several cameos in the film.
