'Cause everyone needs a little help every once in a while' | News
TYLER, TEXAS (KLTV)- One in four children in East Texas are at risk of going hungry in East Texas.
The East Texas Food Bank is working to make sure no family goes hungry by kicking off their annual Hunger Action Month, bringing awareness to food needs in East Texas.
Barbara Herrera is one of the many people who benefit from the Hunger Action Month campaign put on by the East Texas Food Bank.
"I'm on a fixed income and I get two small checks and I just needed a little bit of groceries to last me until I get my food stamps," says Herrera.
Until those food stamps come, Herrera says being able to shop in one of the many pantry agencies in East Texas helps her from going hungry; a feeling she is all too familiar with.
"I would say about 25 to 30 years ago I used to live out on the streets and I was digging through trash cans but the good Lord gave me enough gumption to get out of that bucket," says Herrera.
For Herrera, it's the volunteers and donors who make coming here and asking for help, easier.
"They're really special people who hand out food to the needy and they talk to you like you're a person," says Herrera, "cause everyone needs a little help every once in a while."
East Texas Food Bank says if people would like to donate, they can drop of goods at the food bank.
