Cool weather impacting local food

Cool weather impacting local food

Is it really mid-April? Looking out the kitchen window at my garden it's hard to believe May Day arrives next week. Peas and beans, usually a foot tall already, are barely breaking through the soil. My precious tomatoes from last year's seed are refusing to grow, and my pepper plants are anything but thriving. This late winter weather is really taking a toll on my summer garden plantings and gardens all over east Texas.

Mr. Billy Raibon, the reluctantly appointed President of the Landowners Assocation of Texas after our sweet Miss Fay Radford's passing last month, said his crops are about a month behind schedule. And that means incomes will be about a month behind schedule. Evidenced at tonight's Landowners' Mixer, the cold weather is definitely having an impact on our local food economy and has some of our farmers concerned. Crops that are normally about ready for harvest are no where close and our farmers markets open in less than two weeks.

New City Park to make debut this Friday

New City Park to make debut this Friday

This Friday, October 19, Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass will unveil the sign for Tyler's newest park.

The City of Tyler Parks and Recreation Department will host the unveiling and dedication at 10 a.m. at 2713  Frankston Highway.

The property, donated by long-time St. Louis community residents Gladys and TB Stewart, used to be a historic home site.

Gladys worked for TSID for more than 50 years, while TB was a businessman in Tyler. The couple shared a love for church, community, friends and students.

They also believed children needed to have the opportunity to play and have fun. As a result, the Stewarts donated their homestead to the City of Tyler to serve the children of the St. Louis community, and the City of Tyler.

Survey of Tyler residents underway

Survey of Tyler residents underway

Released by the City of Tyler:

In the next week, a random sampling of 2,000 Tyler residents will receive a survey in the mail asking for their input about City services and community planning.  This is all part of the five-year update to Tyler’s comprehensive plan: Tyler 21.

“It is hard to believe that it has been almost five years since the Council adopted the Tyler 21 Plan,” said Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass.  “Much has been accomplished toward implementation of the original goals; however, the plan calls for an update every five years to ensure it remains current and reflects the desires of the community.”

The formal planning phase will start in November; however, the City is conducting the community survey now so that the results will be available as the process moves forward.

“A cornerstone of the planning effort is citizen input and involvement, including the citizen survey,” added Bass.

The fascinating history of Emmett J. Scott High School

The fascinating history of Emmett J. Scott High School

Released by the City of Tyler on behalf of Emmett J. Scott Reunion:

It is difficult to visualize the beginnings which form the basic framework of Emmett Scott High School.

The high school – the old West End building on South Herndon – was established in 1888, with A.D. Bridge as its first principal.  His wife, a former elementary teacher in the schools (who played for all school programs) resided in Galveston.

The West End School was a four-room structure, housing grades 1-10 inclusive.  A few years later two rooms were added to relieve crowded classrooms.  To further relieve crowed classrooms a three room residence, known as the Northwest school was used.

Grade assignments which meant more than one grade or a grade and a half per teacher, came from P.N. Pennybarker, a scholarly man.  During his tenure here, he and his wife compiled our first State history of Texas.

Some time between 1892 & 1896, Mr.
